Norman Slough II

I am so fortunate that near where I live in Silvana there is an abundance of quiet, rural scenes like this one of the Norman Slough to paint. Thankfully this summer has been unexpectedly warm and dry making daily outings after work possible and pleasurable.

Summer Rain

I love how a rain sky causes the earth to glow. In the Skagit Valley, north of where I live, there are lovely fields and nearby lowland hills which make for some of my favorite landscape subjects.

Collection of Apples

In my home, when you visit, you would see many vignettes throughout the space and one of them is apple stuff... In other words I am never at a shortage for still-life material. The white vintage apple bowl is made of a translucent glass that was interesting to paint.

The Red Pot

I love this time of year when every half-way decent day and every spare moment is spent in the garden. At the end of a productive gardening day there are plenty of items for still-life set-ups.

Pots, Peas and Pail

At this time of year my gardening tools are everywhere. My husband surprised me the other day by bringing home a bag full of seed packets and I decided to use some of them as still-life subject before potting.

Old, Rusty and Dented Like Me

Another sketch from my time spent in Mazama. I was so thankful for my time away, away from the hectic schedule of home and work. While in Mazama I took long walks, went horse-back riding, meditated and just got re-centered. When I arrived I felt as old and dented as this antique milk container. Thank goodness for long vacations !

The Welcome Boot

Here is a little sketch out of my journal used while on a Women's Retreat in Mazama, Washington. Mazama is in Eastern Washington and luckily the Pass through the North Cascade Mountains had just opened when I was getting ready to leave. The sun was out and trees budding so the drive over was spectacular. Just outside the reception office was a stump with a child's cowboy boot sitting on it. There was sort of a lonely feeling looking at that solo boot so I kept it company for a while and sketched it.

Maple, Maple, Cedar

I did this fun little still life of a "Fuel Source" in response to the weekly challenge of The Green Palette, an eco-friendly online artist group I paint with. I live in the woods in Silvana Washington and we burn wood exclusively as our fuel source. Most years we have an abundance of alder to chop and feed through the stove but sometimes we have maple and cedar if they have been blown down by severe winter storms like last year.

Rice Gardener

This was a typical, daily scene while travelling through Viet Nam. Such backbreaking work in the midst of such magnificent scenery. Many workers would wrap newspaper around their calves in place of boots.

Park City Birch Grove

While visiting Park City last August my husband Bill and I took a gondola up to the 8,000 foot level of the ski area. The views were spectacular and the trees were amazing. I could hardly believe that there were still wildflowers and lush foliage in the middle of August.

Reusable Cans

The title of this week's challenge for The Green Palette was "reuse." In my studio I have lots of re-used cans collected from places I travel. I enjoy going into foreign grocery stores and buying thing's I don't recognize or that have a cool label - then back in the studio they get used and remind me of my trips.

Today I thought it would be fun to make a palette knife painting - what better textural subject than the pineapple.

Twenty-Three Roses

St. Valentine's Day is the anniversary of a blind date which, a year later, resulted in marriage to my husband Bill. This year I received these beautiful roses as a reminder of our years together.

Cape Alava Deer

While resting after a 3.5 mile hike to Capa Alava, the most northwestern tip of Washington State, on the Pacific Ocean this lovely deer passed by me. The day was cold but sunny and when I downloaded his picture I pixelated it and saturated the colors which made it exciting to paint from and try to match the mood of the moment.
